Comedian Ricky Gervais? twitter account posts offensive tweet about ?illegal immigrants?

A tweet posted from the account of comedian Ricky Gervais Wednesday night is drawing strong and negative reaction from the Latino community. The verified account of the British actor/comedian posted a Valentine?s Day tweet that read, ?Guys, show how much you love you wife tonight in the restaurant by buying a dead rose from the illegal immigrant who pops in.? The tweet, according to other Twitter profiles that saw it in their stream, received close to 2,000 retweets in just a few hours and also led to Twitter replies such as this one:

By late this morning, however, there was no official record of the tweet on Twitter. It was deleted from Gervais? verified account. Every link that shows up in a Google search of the tweet confirms that the tweet no longer exists on Twitter, except for one link that shows an image of the tweet, as initially reported by Latino Rebels.

Social media reaction to the deleted tweet has been overwhelmingly negative. The tweet comes at a time when public comments about ?illegal immigrants? are seen by many U.S. Latinos as racist and insensitive, no matter the context. It?s unclear who was actually tweeting from Gervais? account ? whether it was him, a representative or whether the account was hacked. NBC Latino did call and e-mail Gervais? publicist for comment and clarification. As of this story?s initial posting, no reply has been received. It also isn?t clear who deleted the tweet, but after the tweet was removed, this tweet appeared on the account:

Gervais is known for his irreverent humor and for pushing the envelope. Last year, Gervais said about his comedy: ?The simple fact is, offence is taken, not given. It?s up to you if you?re offended or not. And remember, just because you?re offended, it doesn?t mean you?re right.? According to the official Gervais blog, the actor is currently filming the new Muppet Movie in London.

Omega-3-rich ground beef available soon

Feb. 4, 2013 ? Thanks to Kansas State University research, part of a healthy diet can include a hamburger rich with omega-3 fatty acids.

Jim Drouillard, professor of animal sciences and industry, developed a technique that enriches ground beef with omega-3 fatty acids -- fatty acids that have been shown to reduce heart disease, cholesterol and high blood pressure. The enriched ground beef is named GreatO Premium Ground Beef and is being sold through Manhattan, Kan.-based company NBO3 Technologies LLC. It will be available mid-February at select retailers in Buffalo, N.Y., and expand to leading retailers and restaurants nationwide later this year.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish and plant oils. The U.S. currently does not have a recommended daily intake of omega-3s, though many doctors and nutritionists recommend between 1,200-1,600 milligrams daily, depending on a person's age and health.

A quarter-pound hamburger made of the enriched ground beef has 200 milligrams of omega-3s and tastes the same as regular ground beef, Drouillard said. This makes the ground beef an alternative for people who want to add or increase their omega-3 fatty acids intake but do not want fish or supplements to do so.

"As a society, Americans' consumption of fish, especially fish that contributes to these omega-3 fats, is quite low compared to other proteins," Drouillard said. "Reasons for this include cost, access to fish and personal preference. Americans do, however, like hamburgers. So if we can give people a hamburger that is rich in omega-3s, it's an alternative form of a product that they already eat and does not require a lifestyle change, which is difficult to make."

The health benefits of omega-3s are not limited to humans. Studies show that dairy and beef cattle with an enriched diet of flaxseed and other omega-3 rich grains have fewer respiratory diseases. The cattle also have higher fertility rates, which helps offset infertility among dairy cattle.

The technology to enrich ground beef with omega-3s is a spinoff of flaxseed research Drouillard began in 1998. Drouillard and his students studied flax for several of its omega-3 fatty acids that may suppress inflammation and reduce diabetes in cattle. Research showed that omega-3 levels dramatically increased in the cattle as more flaxseed was introduced into their diet.

Keeping the omega-3s from becoming saturated fats in cattle's digestive system is a challenge, however. Microorganisms in the rumen -- the largest chamber in the cow's stomach -- modify most of the ingested fats and turn them into saturated fats. This causes ground beef to have low levels of omega-3s. Christian Alvarado Gilis, a doctoral candidate in animal sciences and industry, is researching how to improve omega-3 levels in cattle diets to further enhance the fat profile of beef. Gilis is from Chile.

According to Drouillard, substituting omega-3 fatty acids for saturated fats does not change the ground beef's flavor.

"Knowing that there are a lot of desirable flavor characteristics associated with the fat in beef, we performed tons of sensory panel tests with Kansas State University's meat science faculty and with the department of human nutrition throughout the years to ensure that the flavor is not compromised," Drouillard said. "We found that our panelists were never able to detect appreciable differences in the flavor profiles of the omega-3 rich beef and non-omega-3 beef, even though the fats are quite different."

The owners of NBO3 Technologies LLC have worked closely with Drouillard in developing the concept, and after more than a decade of research on improving the enrichment process, have started to distribute omega-3 enriched ground beef to retailers and food vendors.

The ground beef is part of the company's line of omega-3 enriched foods, which includes pork, chicken, cheese, milk, butter and ice cream. It will be the first ground beef to carry the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's seal of approval for containing omega-3 fatty acids.

Todd Hansen, CEO of NBO3 Technologies LLC, said consumer response has been positive in test markets.

"We have to leap two hurdles with GreatO Premium Ground Beef, which are that the omega-3 fatty acids are really in the beef and that it doesn't change the flavor," Hansen said. "Based on our consumer response, we've cleared those hurdles. We really believe in the health aspect of this product and are using the slogan 'When Every Bite Counts' to emphasize that. I can't wait for consumers to have it available to them."

Ride-hailing apps offer new way to get around town

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? When Hesky Kutscher needed to get across town, he didn't call a taxi. He tapped a smartphone app called Lyft, which allows users to request car rides.

Minutes later, a black hatchback with a big fluffy, pink mustache on its grille pulled up. Kutscher hopped in the front seat and gave the driver a fist bump. Then they cruised over the hilly streets of San Francisco, chatting like neighbors until he was dropped off near Union Square.

Kutscher, who runs a medical data firm, said ride-hailing apps like Lyft ? with its whimsical mustaches ? are more convenient than cabs: "I need to get from A to B. They do it well, they do it for a good price, and the drivers are friendly."

Fed up with traditional taxis, more city dwellers are using their smartphones to request rides using GPS-enabled mobile apps that let riders and drivers find each other in real time. Ride-summoning services such as Uber, SideCar and Lyft are expanding rapidly in San Francisco, New York and other U.S. cities.

Uber allows passengers to use their smartphones to summon luxury town cars and other vehicles driven by professional drivers. Customer credit cards are charged fares based on time and distance.

Lyft and SideCar describe themselves as community "ridesharing platforms" that connect riders and drivers, who use their own vehicles. After each ride, passengers are asked for a voluntary donation based on what others paid for similar trips. The companies take a 20 percent cut.

"We started Lyft to create a system for matching up people who need a ride with people who can offer a ride," said Logan Green, co-founder of San Francisco-based Zimride, which operates Lyft.

But taxi operators say the new ride services are little more than illegal cabs that don't have permits, pay city fees or follow regulations. The upstarts are also steering business away from cab drivers, making it harder to earn a living.

"It makes for an uneven playing field," said Barry Korengold, who heads the San Francisco Cab Drivers Association. "We're not trying to stifle technology. We're saying do it in the legal way."

Uber, which launched in 2010 and offers ride services in 18 cities, has been sued by San Francisco cab drivers and Chicago car-service companies alleging unfair business. The San Francisco-based company has also run into trouble with regulators in New York, Vancouver, Boston and Washington, D.C.

The California Public Utilities Commission last year issued cease-and-desist orders and $20,000 fines to Lyft, Sidecar and Uber for operating illegally. The agency says they are "charter-party carriers of passengers" that need permits certifying their drivers are properly screened, licensed and insured.

In December, the commission agreed to evaluate the safety of the Internet-based ride services and plans to draft new rules to regulate them over the next several months. Last week, the agency reached agreements with Lyft and Uber that allows them to operate legally until the new rules are written. It's in discussions with SideCar over its operations.

"We're not trying to put them out of business, but they cannot avoid the basics of public safety," said Frank Lindh, the commission's general counsel.

Lyft and SideCar say they're not charter-party carriers, but ridesharing platforms. They say they shouldn't be regulated like taxis or limos because rides are prearranged, payments are voluntary and the firms don't own the vehicles or employ the drivers.

"Existing regulations have not caught up with the technology," said Sunil Paul, CEO of SideCar, which launched a year ago in San Francisco and is preparing to expand to 15 other cities. "This is a new medium, and a new medium needs a new set of rules."

Lyft and Sidecar say they have measures to ensure passenger safety. They interview drivers, check driving records, conduct criminal background checks and inspect vehicles. Drivers use their own insurance, but both companies provide additional coverage up to $1 million.

Other cities and states are also figuring out how to regulate the new transportation apps. The International Association of Transportation Regulators is working on guidelines for regulations that, if adopted, could restrict the upstarts.

Internet-based ride-hailing apps should be regulated, but regulators must be careful not to quash innovation in a transportation sector, said Daniel Sperling, director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis.

Sperling believes technology can reduce congestion, pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions by making transportation more efficient and convenient, allowing more people to live without personal cars.

"This is the first wave of what we hope will be a whole series of innovative companies and technologies that will transform transportation as we know it," Sperling said.

Lyft launched in San Francisco in June and began offering rides in Los Angeles on Thursday. It's cultivated a playful image with its pink mustaches and fist-bump ice-breakers. Users sign up with their Facebook accounts.

To maintain safety and quality, both Lyft and SideCar ask passengers and drivers to rate each other after each ride. Too many low ratings, and they're booted from the network.

Both services have attracted a diverse group of drivers. Lyft drivers include PhD students who need a break from writing dissertations, preschool teachers looking for adult conversation and artists seeking to earn extra money, said Green.

San Francisco State University student Shelby Stone, 23, drives her black Volkswagen Rabbit for Lyft four or five days a week to help pay car expenses and other bills.

"I have a blast with Lyft," Stone said after dropping off passenger Kutscher by Union Square. "All day long I'm meeting new people and getting to know the city of San Francisco."

Twin polar bear cubs to go on display at Ohio zoo

TOLEDO, Ohio - Twin polar bears born at a northwest Ohio zoo are expected to go on display this spring.

The Toledo Zoo says the cubs born Nov. 21 are the second set of twins for their mother, named Crystal, who is caring for them. Zoo workers don't have direct contact with the cubs, but a monitor in the den tracks their progress.

The Blade in Toledo (http://bit.ly/143sLhn ) reports the twins are expected to go on exhibit in May.

They haven't been named because their genders haven't been determined. The curator of mammals, Dr. Randi Meyerson, says the zoo hasn't decided how to choose the names, but it might let the public help.

Meyerson says the cubs won't be put in the polar bear exhibit until they're stronger and learn to swim.

Halfpipe skier Simon d'Artois suffers concussion

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? Halfpipe skier Simon d'Artois is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a concussion and blacking out for about 10 seconds Saturday when he smacked his head during a fall at the U.S. Grand Prix.

Kelley Korbin, manager of media relations for the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association, said a CAT scan was normal but d'Artois continues to experience concussion symptoms. He will remain in the hospital, likely overnight, until he feels better. The skier's father is with him at the hospital.

D'Artois fell near the top of the 22-foot superpipe and slid to the bottom unconscious.

Ski patrol immediately was on the scene and attended to him for about 20 minutes before taking him off in a sled. He was wearing a neck brace but flashed a "rock on" sign with his right hand as he left the venue.

Five of the 12 men in the finals fell Saturday. France's Benoit Valentin appeared to injure his left knee.

American David Wise won the event.

Canadian freestyle pioneer Sarah Burke crashed on the same halfpipe last year while training and died a week later from the injuries.

The dangers of winter action sports came into focus again this week when freestyle snowmobile rider Caleb Moore died after a crash at the Winter X Games.

Korbin said Burke's death likely was a big reason for the extra precaution.

"I'm sure that played a factor in taking it very seriously," Korbin said. "It wasn't overreaction but heroic measures. That's appreciated."

She said the team also had no problem with the Park City halfpipe.

"I heard the pipe was in fantastic condition today," Korbin said. "It wasn't anything to do with that. We have absolutely no concerns about the condition of the pipe or manner in which Park City treated his injury. It was commendable."

The skiers competing also had no complaints about the halfpipe, though they acknowledged the walls are more vertical than others.

"It's just the way it was cut," said American Torin Yater-Wallace, who finished second Saturday in the men's event behind teammate Wise. "They gave it a lot of vert, almost a little more than 90-degrees, so you've got to absorb when you go over the lip so you don't land too far in the flat."

He said he changed his second run after seeing the crash, downgrading to a double.

"Personally, I don't like to watch everybody's run, it kind of scares me," said Wallace. "Obviously, when you see something like that, when somebody hits their head pretty hard, it's pretty, like, mind-boggling, and makes you think. But then you have to go do your run and get into competitive mode."

FREE IS MY LIFE: MOVIE REVIEW: Warm Bodies

This move review for "Warm Bodies" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

I had been looking forward to Warm Bodies for a while now because it sounded wholly unique: a zombie/human love story, where eventually love causes the zombie to become human again. Luckily, Warm Bodies did not disappoint, though it was definitely like a typical "BRAINS! BRAINSSS!" zombie movie in some ways as well.

R (Nicholas Hoult) lives with other zombies at at what used to be the airport. He's made a home for himself in an abandoned plane, where he keeps the knickknacks he has collected, some of which are an old record player and classic records. His best friend is M (Rob Corddry), and on a good day, they're able to say one or two words to each other. R, M, and some of the other zombies get hungry one day and venture out, where they find Julie (Teresa Palmer) and her boyfriend Perry (Dave Franco) and their friends. Once they start fighting the zombies, R isn't sure if he wants to eat them, but when Perry smacks him, he gets provoked, and starts eating him, especially "the best part" - his brain - which contains his human memories; these make R feel more human, like he used to be. Most of his memories involve Julie, and after R looks up and sees her, he feels the urge to protect her rather than eat her. He kidnaps Julie and brings her back to his plane, and eventually she learns that R isn't like the other zombies; he actually has a conscience.

I later realized that?Warm Bodies?is actually a lot like?Warm Bodies? The two main characters are R and Julie, and they're from two different worlds. There's a scene where R comes into the "human living area" of the city to find Julie, and he's talking to her while she's up on a balcony. Her father (John Malkovich), one of the military leaders, DEFINITELY doesn't want Julie to date a "corpse," as he calls the zombie, even when she demonstrates to him that R is getting better at talking. I thought this was a clever way to play this movie, although I would have liked a lot more info on the back story and how the zombies first started; all we get is that there was a sickness going on and once it started, people started to infect each other.

Yes, see this movie, but if you can't handle some gore, then be aware there's some flesh-eating, mostly in the beginning of the movie. One of the more grosser scenes is when R keeps eating Perry's brain - almost like he brought some back to the plane with him as a snack - so that he can see memories of Julie and learn how to better "connect" with her. Once R starts becoming more human, he remembers more words, as well, and I thought that Nicholas Hoult was great in the role; before that, he had to communicate mostly with his eyes and body language. He also made R seem like a normal teenage boy at times, which is no easy feat when you are a zombie. My chief complaint with the film, like I said before, is that I would've liked to have had more back story, but as another critic said to me: "It's a zombie movie! You don't need a backstory!" In any case, Warm Bodies is still worth seeing, and might be one of the more unique stories I've seen at the theater lately, even though I'm generally not a fan of zombie films.

Warm Bodies?is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 97 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

(AP Photo/Wildlife conservation society, Mark Packila)

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? The tenacious wolverine, a snow-loving carnivore sometimes called the "mountain devil," could soon join the list of species threatened by climate change ? a dubious distinction putting it in the ranks of the polar bear and several other animals the government says will lose crucial habitat as temperatures rise.

Federal wildlife officials Friday proposed Endangered Species Act protections for the wolverine in the Lower 48 states. That's a step twice denied under the Bush administration, then delayed in 2010 when the Obama administration said other imperiled species had priority.

It likely means an end to trapping the animals for their fur outside Alaska.

But federal officials said they won't use the animal's status as a means to regulate greenhouse gases blamed in climate change. And other human activities ? from snowmobiling and ski resorts to timber harvest and ? would not be curtailed because they do not appear to be significant threats to wolverines, officials said.

There are an estimated 250 to 300 wolverines in the contiguous U.S., clustered in small, isolated groups primarily in the Northern Rockies of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Washington. Larger populations persist in Alaska and Canada.

Maxing out at 40 pounds and tough enough to stand up to grizzly bears, the animals will be no match for anticipated declines in deep mountain snows female wolverines need to establish dens and raise their young, scientists said.

In some areas, such as central Idaho, suitable habitat could disappear entirely, officials said.

Yet because those losses could take decades to unfold, federal wildlife officials said there's still time to bolster the population, including by reintroducing them to the high mountains of Colorado.

"This is a species there is still time to do something about," said Mike Thabault, ecological services director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's mountain-prairie region.

Wildlife advocates, who sued to force the government to act on the issue, said the animal's plight should be used by the Obama administration to leverage tighter restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions.

As with the polar bear, the government is sidestepping that thorny proposition with the wolverine, and said in Friday's proposal that listing the animal as threatened "will not regulate greenhouse gas emissions."

Thabault said the agency would be on tenuous scientific grounds if it tried to draw a link between specific emission sources and impacts on wolverines.

Advocates expressed disappointment, with Noah Greenwald from the Center for Biological Diversity saying the administration "should not be exempting greenhouse gas emissions from the Endangered Species Act."

A Washington, D.C., attorney, John Martin, who represented the energy industry during litigation over polar bears, said he expects no change in the administration's policy against using endangered wildlife to regulate emissions.

Friday's proposal also allows Colorado's wildlife agency to reintroduce an experimental population of wolverines that eventually could spill into neighboring portions of New Mexico and Wyoming.

It would shut down wolverine trapping in Montana, the only one of the Lower 48 states where the practice is still allowed an annual quota of five animals.

This year's trapping season was blocked by a state court order, but Montana officials hoped to restore trapping next year.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks spokesman Ron Aasheim said the state will review the federal proposal and had not settled on a response.

Once found throughout the Rocky Mountains and in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, wolverines were wiped out across most of the U.S. by the 1930s due to unregulated trapping and poisoning campaigns, said Bob Inman, a wolverine researcher with the Wildlife Conservation Society.

In the decades since, they have largely recovered in the Northern Rockies but not in other parts of their historical range.

While reintroducing the animals further south might seem counterintuitive, Inman said Colorado's abundance of 14,000-foot mountains would make it well suited as a refuge for the animals as warmer temperatures set in at lower elevations.

Only one wolverine currently inhabits the state, a male that wandered down several years ago from northern Wyoming's Teton Range, about 500 miles away. Inman said Colorado has enough high-mountain territory to support up to 100 more of the animals.

"That's like a 30 percent increase in their population size," he said.

Any reintroduction into Colorado would require approval from state wildlife commissioners and the Legislature, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said.

Representatives of the state's ski and agriculture industries in the past have raised concerns that bringing wolverines back could hurt their industries. Hampton said no decision has been made and it could take years to work out all the details.

Other areas where wolverines once roamed also could serve as future refuges.

Those include portions of Utah, Oregon's Cascade Range, Wyoming's Big Horn Mountains and the Sierra Nevada, said Shawn Sartorius, a biologist with the Fish and Wildlife Service based in Montana.

A first step toward calming Egypt? Political leaders renounce violence

Many leaders at the meeting of Egypt's feuding factions in Cairo today expressed optimism that it would be a turning point in the country's political crisis.

It remains to be seen whether the pledge to end confrontation will halt a week of bloodshed on the streets that killed nearly 60 people. Opposition groups did not cancel new demonstrations scheduled for Friday.

But participants at the meeting, including leaders of Mr. Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and its secular rivals, described their joint statement as a major step towards ending a conflict that has made the most populous Arab state seem all but ungovernable two years after an uprising toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

The meeting was convened by Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, head of the thousand-year-old al-Azhar university and mosque, one of the few institutions still seen as neutral in a society that has become increasingly polarized.

He told politicians that a national dialogue, "in which all elements of Egyptian society participate, without any exclusion, is the only tool to resolve any problems or differences.

"Political work has nothing to do with violence or sabotage and the welfare of everyone and the fate of our nation depends on respect for the rule of law," the sheikh said.

Participants signed a document pledging to renounce violence and agreed to set up a committee of politicians from rival groups to work out a program for further talks.

"We come out of the meeting with a type of optimism," liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei said. "Each of us will do what we can, with goodwill, to build trust once again among the factions of the Egyptian nation."

Saad el-Katatni, head of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, called it "an historic day".

"Everyone in the meeting expressed readiness to make concessions to make this experiment succeed," he said.

Al-Azhar, one of the main seats of learning in Sunni Islam worldwide, has tended to keep itself above Egypt's political fray. Its extraordinary intervention follows a warning by the army chief on Tuesday that street battles - which erupted last week to mark the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Mubarak - could bring about the collapse of the state.

Spirit of the revolution

The opposition accuses Morsi of betraying the spirit of the revolution by concentrating too much power in his own hands and those of the Brotherhood, a decades-old underground Islamist movement banned under Mubarak. The Brotherhood accuses its foes of trying to topple Egypt's first elected leader.

Participants at Thursday's meeting included Mr. Katatni and the Brotherhood's deputy leader Mahmoud Ezzat. Television footage showed them sitting opposite liberals Mr. ElBaradei and Amr Moussa, respectively former heads of the UN nuclear watchdog and the Arab League, and leftist Hamdeen Sabahi.

The streets have grown quieter in the past few days, and on Wednesday authorities scaled back a curfew imposed on three Suez Canal cities where most of the week's blood was spilt.

Nevertheless, even as Thursday's meeting was under way, a statement issued by opposition parties including Mr. Sabahi's Popular Current reiterated a call for demonstrations at the presidential palace in Cairo on Friday.

"The wave of revolutionary anger that erupted in the Egyptian provinces to express the Egyptian people's rejection of the continuation of the same policies - even if the faces have changed - will continue and go on to stress its legitimate demands in achieving the goals of the revolution," it said.

Attending the meeting was a partial reversal for the opposition alliance, which had previously spurned Morsi's call for talks, demanding that the president first agree to include opponents in a national unity government.

"Discussions concluded that there is no solution to the problems of the nation's democratic transition other than through dialogue, and dialogue must have foundations and guarantees, and not preconditions," the Brotherhood's Katatni said.

The secularists are nonetheless likely to continue to press for inclusion in a national unity government, a call also backed by the hardline Islamist Nour party in an unlikely alliance of Morsi's critics from opposite ends of the political spectrum.

The Brotherhood rejects a unity government as an attempt by Morsi's foes to take power they could not win at the ballot box.

The crisis forced Morsi to cut short a visit to Europe on Wednesday that had been intended to lure investment to Egypt. While in Berlin, the president sidestepped calls for a unity government, saying the next cabinet would be formed after parliamentary elections due in April.

Unrest tarnishes Morsi's rise

The rise of an elected Islamist president in the Arab world's most populous state after generations of secularist military rule is probably the most important outcome of the wave of Arab revolts over the past two years.

But Morsi's seven-month rule has been tarnished by the civil unrest, worsening an economic crisis that forced Cairo to sell off most of its reserves to keep its currency from crashing.

The past week's violence followed weeks of demonstrations last year against a new constitution, as Morsi failed to unite Egyptians despite the Brotherhood winning repeated elections.

Ejijah Zarwan, who analyses Egyptian politics for the European Council on Foreign Relations, said Thursday's intervention by al-Azhar was important, but it was far from clear whether it would be enough to calm the streets.

"It's a good first step. Certainly it will help the formal opposition to be very clearly on record as opposing violence," he said. But he added: "The people fighting the police and burning buildings are not partisans of any political party. They might not even vote."

"There's a political crisis and there's a social and economic crisis. A negotiated solution to the political crisis will certainly help but it's just a necessary first step towards resolving the social and economic crisis."

Sea Launch Rocket Fails During Liftoff, Satellite Lost

PARIS ? A commercial Sea Launch rocket failed 40 seconds after liftoff from its floating launch platform in the Pacific Ocean on Friday (Feb. 1) destroying the Intelsat IS-27 telecommunications satellite and compromising Sea Launch's long road to recovery from its previous failure in January 2007.

Now headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, and owned by an affiliate of Russia's RSC Energia space-hardware manufacturer, Sea Launch AG had emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in October 2010 ? a reorganization that was an indirect consequence of the 2007 failure ? and returned to flight in September 2011. Friday's launch failure occured just after the company's Zenit 3SL rocket lifted off from its launch platform at 1:56 a.m. EST (0656 GMT).

With a new lease on life made possible by the backing of the world's largest and third-largest commercial satellite fleet operators, Intelsat of Washington and Luxembourg, and Eutelsat of Paris, respectively,?Sea Launch conducted five successful launches through December 2012?? three for Intelsat, two for Eutelsat.

Sea Launch had been preparing a relatively light manifest for 2013 as it replenished its stock of hardware for the Russian- and Ukrainian-built Zenit 3SL rocket it uses for operations. The company had planned to increase its launch rate, starting in 2014, to four commercial campaigns per year. [Amazing Rocket Launches of 2013 (Photos)]

The only customer whose launch may be affected by the Thursday rocket failure is Israel's Spacecom satellite fleet operator, whose Amos 4 telecommunications satellite is scheduled for launch on a Land Launch rocket in July.

Land Launch uses the same Zenit 3 rocket configuration as Sea Launch, but operates from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The launch contract with Spacecom is not with Sea Launch, but with Space International Services (SIS) of Moscow, and is part of a contract signed for the 2008 launch of Spacecom?s Amos 3 satellite.

Intelsat's IS-27, a Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems 702MP model weighing 6,215 kilograms at launch, was to have been operated from 55.5 degrees west longitude, where it would have replaced Intelsat's Galaxy 11 and Intelsat 805 satellites. Intelsat said in a Feb. 1 statement that services from these satellites will continue as usual.

But IS-27 was more than a replacement of existing capacity. Its payload included a Ku-band beam over the North Atlantic sea and air routes that would have completed Intelsat?s Global Mobility project, featuring 10 beams on seven satellites allowing uninterrupted coverage for mobile maritime and air customers using Ku-band.

The satellite also carried a beam over the Andean nations and Mexico, and a beam over Brazil.

Intelsat is one of several satellite operators that are using L-, Ku- and Ka-band to develop a mobile satellite services business with maritime and aeronautical customers. Whether the IS-27 loss will affect the contracts Intelsat has signed for mobile satellite services was not immediately known. The company said in its Feb. 1 statement that it is "committed to working with customers to identify the most appropriate solutions for service continuity."

IS-27 also carried a UHF-band payload that Intelsat had hoped to lease to the U.S. Defense Department. But as of the launch date, no customer for this payload, a frequency mainly used by military forces, had made itself known. Intelsat had added a similar payload to the IS-22 satellite, which is already in orbit, and had secured the Australian defense forces as a customer for the life of the satellite.

IS-27 was insured for about $400 million, meaning the world?s space-insurance underwriters are starting 2013 in the red. Satellite insurance rates have been low for the past several years as premiums have far exceeded claims, in part because most of the recent launch failures, until Sea Launch, had been carrying government satellites that did not take out insurance.

The Sea Launch failure is the latest in a series affecting Russian rockets. Russia?s heavy-lift Proton rocket, which through International Launch Services (ILS) of Reston, Va., competes with Sea Launch on the commercial market, in December suffered its third failure in 16 months.

Russia?s small Rockot launcher, which like Proton is built by Khrunichev Space Center of Moscow, successfully launched three Russian military satellites in January but shut down before it could perform a planned de-orbit maneuver.

Failure-review boards are now in place for the Proton and Rockot issues. Sea Launch said it would immediately establish its own board of inquiry.

Novel radiation therapy method shortens prostate cancer treatment time

Feb. 1, 2013 ? According to a study in the January issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology, the use of volume-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) to deliver intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to prostate cancer patients results in an overall reduction in treatment time of approximately 14 percent. The study was performed at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta.

Treatment with IMRT is increasingly standard for prostate cancer. However, although the benefits of IMRT in the treatment of prostate cancer are ample, it remains a complex and time-consuming treatment modality that requires numerous gantry positions, a large number of monitor units and considerable daily treatment time commitments by patients.

"Given the time requirement by patients for daily prostate cancer treatment, we aimed to measure the true efficiency of VMAT treatment compared with IMRT using custom institutional software to record the actual in-room times," said William A. Hall, MD, author of the study.

Custom institutional software was used to mine the treatment times from the record-and-verify database. The in-room time (the time between patient entry and exit) was computed for each patient. Average room time was compared between VMAT patients and IMRT patients. Subgroup comparisons (1-arc or 2-arc VMAT, 5-field or 7-field IMRT, and electromagnetic transponder [Calypso] or gold-marker tracking) were performed.

Average room time was significantly shorter for all VMAT versus DMLC IMRT procedures. The average room time for all DMLC IMRT patients was found to be 14.69 ? 4.36 min, and the average room time for all VMAT patients was found to be 12.6 ? 2.62 min. Room time was longer for Calypso versus gold seed patients, but VMAT reduced treatment time in Calypso patients. This resulted in Calypso VMAT patients' having similar treatment times to non-Calypso DMLC IMRT patients.

"With an aging population and rapidly rising rates of prostate cancer, the ability to determine the most efficient modality by which patients with adenocarcinoma of the prostate should be treated is critical. It seems from our analysis that 5-field IMRT and VMAT are the most efficient modalities by which to deliver prostate IMRT," said Hall.

"Furthermore, our analysis shows that if more advanced methods of IMRT delivery are used, localization devices can be incorporated without any statistically significant differences in the overall treatment time. This may provide important information to prostate cancer practices looking to improve their efficiency while maximizing the quality of their radiation therapy delivery," said Hall.

Internships now ?as important as a first class degree? | Graduate Fog

leather jacket thumb 150x150 Internships now as important as a first class degree says expertGOOD GRADES ARE WORTHLESS WITHOUT RELEVANT EXPERIENCE, SAY UK?S BIG GRADUATE RECRUITERS

Graduates who worked hard on their studies but spent their summers doing bar work or a shop job will miss out on the best graduate jobs in 2013, analysts have said.

In an astonishing illustration of employers? ever-increasing demands on young applicants, half of the UK?s top graduate recruiters said those without relevant experience have ?little or no chance? of being offered a job at their firm this year, even if they have a first-class degree from a top university. Martin Birchall, managing director of High Fliers Research, said:

?This latest research confirms that taking part in work placements or internships whilst at university is now just as important as getting a 2.1 or a first-class degree. Graduate recruiters warn that in a highly competitive job market, new graduates who?ve not had any work experience at all during their studies are increasingly unlikely to be offered a good graduate job after university.?

While on one hand it seems fair that employers should favour candidates with experience over those without, Graduate Fog is concerned that this now seems to be an issue of the quality?and relevance of that experience. What they seem to be saying is that a candidate who has spent their summers working as a waitress is not as impressive as one who has spent their summers working for a big PR firm or at an investment bank. If that is the case, is it really fair? Are all the best opportunities really open to all?

PR internships are often unpaid ? and investment banking internships are always in big cities, usually London. If you are an undergraduate whose parents live in a rural area or you can?t afford to work for low wages, can you hope to compete with those based in cities who have greater financial support from their families? The report also showed that a third of this year?s entry-level positions will be filled by graduates who have already worked in their organisation, so it?s clear that getting ?in? with the right people as an undergraduate is a major boost to your job hunt once you graduate ? an enormous advantage. But what if you?re a young person who is not in a position to be able to gain that advantage?

The good news is that the total number of vacancies among the big graduate recruiters is expected to rise by 2.7% in 2013, echoing the findings of the recent Association of Graduate Recruiters report which also predicted a jump this year. However, recruitment is still well below pre-recession levels ? this year?s intake is 11% less than it was in 2007. And, with many of the Class of 2012 still struggling to find their way into proper, paid, full-time jobs, this looks set to be another year of tough competition for the best graduate positions.

?

*ARE GRADUATE RECRUITERS DEMANDING TOO MUCH?
Are good quality work experience opportunities really open to all? Is it fair that an unpaid internship may be seen as more valuable than a shop job, when so many young people are struggling with their finances? Are graduate recruiters demanding more and more from their young applicants? And are you confident you will be able to offer what they?re looking for? Could you afford to do the best internships during your summer holidays ? or did you have to focus on finding a job near you that paid a decent wage?

Airmail Is a Fully-Featured Yet Fast Mac Email Client with Support for Gmail, Dropbox, and More

Airmail Is a Fully-Featured Yet Fast Mac Email Client with Support for Gmail, Dropbox, and MoreOS X: Airmail is a well-designed, fast, and fully-featured IMAP email client that works perfectly with Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, or any standard IMAP account. It integrates all the features you'd expect, and you can even automatically attach files with your Dropbox account.

Airmail supports all kinds of Gmail features, from priority inbox to labels to proper archiving. You can even remap certain actions, such as rerouting starred mail to separate label. Airmail has a bunch of really interesting features on top of that, too. You can choose between several themes to make your message view more compact or organized in various ways. It allows you to create separate notifications for different mail accounts so you can tell the difference when new mail comes into one or the other. Of course, Dropbox is also supported for attachments. If you've used our favorite Mac mail app Sparrow, you'll find a lot of Airmail familiar. With Google's purchase of Sparrow, however, development has stopped. Airmail seems poised to take over and add a lot to like in the process.

Currently Airmail is in public beta, which means you need to sign up to get a copy. This process isn't difficult, however, as you just need a HockeyApp account and you'll (seemingly) be automatically approved for download. To sign up and get a copy, just follow the link below.
