Tokoroa Family Follow Petrol Station Robber Home | Stuff.co.nz

A petrol station attendant's family played their detective cards perfectly at the weekend after a man cleaned out the cash register at knife point.

Detective constable Janice McCashin, of Tokoroa Police, said the pair of sleuths did everything right.

A lone woman was working at the Aotea Mobil station on Balmoral Drive, Tokoroa, at about 3pm on Saturday when a 27-year-old walked in.

He allegedly whipped out a knife and demanded money.

McCashin said the female attendent did as she was requested and handed him some cash.?

The man then fled.

But the incident was far from over.

The distressed woman phoned family and gave them a description of the offender.

Two people hopped in their vehicle and began to patrol the streets in seach of the criminal. They soon found the man strolling along a street.

''They followed him while on the phone to police and we got to their location just as the man entered his house and we've gone in and arrested him.''

The man went quietly and is due to appear in the Tokoroa District Court today charged with aggravated robbery.

McCashin thanked the family members for their ''good work''.

''They did the right thing,'' she said.

''They kept a safe distance and obviously gave us regular updates which helped us in assisting them and capturing him.

''[The petrol station attendant] was obviously very upset and shocked about what happened and she has good family support to get her through this ordeal.''
